In Chicago, Coach Joe Camper assembled a group of gay men who had never played any organized sport in their lives. His mission was to teach them how to play softball from the ground up so that, come summer, they could play in the gay softball league. The purpose of this team’s journey was to exorcise demons from their less coordinated days of youth.

“Getting old ain’t for sissies…”, Estimasted completion: Winter 2012

I first heard these words from George Buse as I befriended him while shooting this documentary about his declining years. The youth-obsessed gay culture has grown into cliché, but there continues to be a sustained denial about the waning inevitabilities that await all. This documentary examines the final years of George Buse, an elder activist of gay and lesbian the community who struggled with poverty, physical challenges and loneliness. Living in subsidized housing, almost exclusively heterosexual, this documentary examines a life rarely considered on the radar of the lesbian and gay community: life in the margins. These moments deliver poignant insight into a man’s life and his brave struggle to maintain social connections, vitality and dignity.
